Battery Processing Unit (BPU) and Battery Interface Module (BIM):

Autonomous battery monitoring system designed for a rugged rail environment. The BIM commands groups of lead-acid cells, voltage and temperature and communicates the information to the BPU via the CAN network.  The BPU collects and processes the data for display on an integrated LCD screen. The BPU communicates the information to the locomotive gateway over an RS485 bus.

The BPU and BIM were designed to monitor large format battery systems for hybrid locomotives and provide information to the engineer.  We anticipate other applications for this technology in the near future.

EnergyCS PawnVT battery management system is being used to monitor the traction battery for a diesel hybrid electric switcher locomotive.  Significant cost savings and improved monitoring capabilities are provided by the system, which is quicker to install and easier to maintain.  The custom application hardware was developed for Railpower under contract with EnergyCS.
